  • Give yourself plenty of time to get to your interview – aim to arrive 10-15 minutes early to show prospective employers you are punctual

  • Be prepared with key questions for your interviewer – practice answers to commonly asked questions in interviews e.g. “tell us about yourself” and “what are your strong points”.

  • Remain attentive through the whole interview – maintain good eye contact, sit straight in your chair and show a high level of interest.

  • Show your interest – by the conclusion of the interview make sure you state that you are interested in the position and what the next step will be in the interviewing process.

Interview Sample Questions

  • “Tell me about yourself” The employer wants to know your experience, skills and education. Keep it short and sweet, 1-2 minutes

  • “Why do you think you are qualified for this job?” Discuss aspects of the role you have applied for and give examples as to why you are suitable for it.

  • “Why are you wanting to leave your current employment?” This can give a lot away about you. Focus more on the opportunities that will be available to you if you were offered the position available and how that will affect your career advancement.

  • “Why are you interested in this position?” Your answer should demonstrate your knowledge of the company and re-emphasise your suitability for the position. Give examples of things that attracted you to this position and the company, so the interviewer can see that you match their work environment.

  • “What do you like/dislike about your current position?” You don’t have to get too detailed with this answer however some good options are you like challenges, fast paced environments and high pressured situations and you may find the position not challenging enough.

  • “What do you consider your biggest strengths to be in the workplace?” No bragging here. Try and think of 2 or 3 good points and give examples for why they are your strengths.

  • “What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?” Definitely be realistic in your answer. One or two promotions in this time frame is realistic!

  • “How would you handle a situation where you have an unhappy customer/patient?” This would be one of those questions that you should practice prior to interview. Turning a negative into a positive is always a good approach to take.

Writing Your Resume

A CV has to be very carefully put together. It is basically a summary of ‘the story so far’. It is a marketing document, which needs to make a big impact on prospective employers.

The important thing to remember is that the people reading the CV will not want to read through reams of background information. Research shows that employers read and make an initial assessment of CVs in between 15 and 25 seconds! So your CV needs to stand out from the rest, put duties in bullet format as it is easily read, ensuring not to leave out important information. Dates need to be precise and include relevant systems used, computer software etc.

Try to complete your CV in two or three pages at the most. You will find a sample resume format below to help you.
